Mariah Carey’s Has Been Dethroned As The Most Popular Holiday Song
Mariah’s song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has reportedly been the most played Christmas song for the past 20 years, but this year something else has topped the list.
Okay, so the original song and the 2012 cover are actually rather good (in a family-friendly, sickly-sweet kind of way) and they’re certainly easier to sing along with after a few cherrys. Mariah’s instant-classic had been the no. 1 song on repeat in stores since its release in 1994, but this year, “The Shins'” cover of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” has taken the top spot.
To create the list, PlayNetwork analyzed data from more than 400 of their worldwide retail partners.
Unlikely challengers for the P.A. system holiday crown, The Shins have successfully deposed Mariah Carey as the undisputed queen of music you grow slowly annoyed by while doing last-minute Christmas shopping at the mall.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th most popular songs, according to Paste Magazine, are Christina Aguilera’s “Christmas Time”, “Christmas Wrapping” by the Waitresses, and Jack Johnson’s “Someday At Christmas”. Listen to it and watch the equally unusual video, below.
