Hundreds march in Chicago a day after mayor’s apology
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel faces increased pressure to resign, as local black religious leaders called early Friday for a “vote of no confidence” against him for the 2014 cops shooting of a 17-year old black teenager.
Dashcam video was released late last month showing McDonald being shot 16 times while apparently walking away from police during an incident on October 20, 2014.
Protests continued in Chicago over the Laquan McDonald case with activists calling for the Justice Department to investigate City Hall and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.
“These people are marching because time and time again black people and people of color and poor people are being mistreated by this legal system here called the Chicago police”, Hunter said.
They are expected to thank the public for demanding justice in the case and change in the culture of the Chicago Police Department.
Since the video’s release, McDonald’s death became another example in the current debate over gun violence and treatment of African-Americans by the police.
The federal judge said he’d decide January 14 whether to order the city to release the footage.
Chance the Rapper brought some of Chicago’s struggles to the national stage Saturday by mentioning veteran Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke in his “Saturday Night Live” debut.
Carson said he made a decision to speak out on the McDonald shooting and subsequent protests because of his meeting with religious leaders.
For days, hundreds of protesters have shut down the streets of Chicago to rally for the resignations of Emanuel and Alvarez in response to the shooting video. He fired the police chief and named a new head of the agency that investigates police conduct.
According to Alderman Ricardo Munoz, the disconnect between how the Latino community rates the mayor compared to the police department comes as no surprise being that Latinos are more trusting of cops. This includes the preparation of derivative works of, or the incorporation of such content intoother works.
“I don’t think our mayor can fix it”, said Father Larry Dowling. Video of the killing was released two weeks ago, setting off protests and calls for the mayor’s resignation.
Hunter says the teen always greeted friends and family with a hug and was a “jokester”.
“Not only in Chicago, but across the nation there are bad apples in police departments”.
