Eddie Lacy, James Starks lead Packers past Cowboys 28-7
With their 28-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the Cowboys fell to 4-9.
Big number: 44 – Rushing attempts for the Packers, showcasing a balanced offensive attack featuring 124 ards from Lacy and 71 yards from Starks.
Do the fans in Green Bay even believe the Packers have a shot to win it all? Professionally, I felt I had to do it. I had to make sure I did my job. Running the football starts up front.
Last week Dallas pulled out an improbably 19-16 MNF win against the Redskins by driving for the winning field goal with less than a minute left on the clock, shortly after they surrendered the tying touchdown. On the other hand, should the Vikings win that head-to-head matchup and finish with the same record as the Packers, they would claim the title based on a better record within the division.
Matt Cassel and the Cowboys passing game struggled through the elements, amassing just 114 yards through the air.
“We’ve been up and down most of the year with our play”, said Rodgers. “I think we both got things out in that conversation, and we’re both moving forward from that incident”. Matt Cassel has not been good throwing the ball downfield, so the opportunity for explosive plays will be few. Dallas was 3-1 with Tony Romo at quarterback but 1-8 without him. On the day, Rodgers was 22-for-35 for 218 yards and a passer rating of 99.5. Cobb was targeted 12 times at wide receiver, catching eight passes for 81 yards.
NOTES: McCarthy said C Corey Linsley, who reinjured his ankle in the last game, will be hard-pressed to play Sunday.
With four games left to play, there was still time to get the offense going and playing some of its best football entering the playoffs. On the turnover, Cassel threw slightly behind and slightly high to Bryant, who couldn’t make the catch.
“It’s definitely a springboard for us”, Lacy said.
It wasn’t the freezing conditions, though, that thwarted Romo and the Cowboys in January. Should the Cowboys lose to the Packers on Sunday, they could see their 2015 season come to an end as well. “We’ve asked a lot of him and just want everyone to be consistent”. “So we need to strive for more consistency”. “We’ve got to win another one [at Oakland on Sunday] and then worry about the division”. Curiously, the Packers didn’t go to Lacy despite having three shots at a touchdown from one yard out on their second series, and failed to score. His only worse statistical day was catching 0-for-6 passes vs. New Orleans as a rookie in 2010.
The defense can also jumpstart this game by getting back to what they did earlier on in the season: sacks and turnovers. There wasn’t really anything I could do. I called it today and he suggested things.
-TE Jason Witten played in his 200th consecutive game. One of those receptions came on an incredible 17-yard touchdown catch along the sideline, as Johnson somehow kept both feet inbounds while tightly covered by Shields. Two of his catches were stopped a yard short of a first down on third-down plays. With Green Bay nursing a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter, James Starks’ run up the middle for a 30-yard touchdown to finally put a brutal game out of its misery (sorry, national TV audience). The Packers gained 78 yards on nine carries on the series.
