MLB Will Not Reinstate Pete Rose
Major League Baseball said Rose, 74, was informed of Manfred’s decision verbally and in writing that his application has been denied. For years Rose lied about his betting history, saying that he only put down bets as a manager. Document | Commissioner’s Written Decision on Pete Rose Commissioner Rob Manfred decided in that Rose “has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life”.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday expressed irritation with Major League Baseball for not rescinding its ban on Pete Rose joining the Hall of Fame.
“Pete’s fall from grace is without parallel, but he recognizes that it was also of his own making”, they said.
“Rose initially denied betting on baseball now and only later in the interview did he “clarify” his response to admit such betting”, Manfred wrote.
The decision upheld the original ban that prevents Rose from associating or working with any major- or minor-league team. Manfred wrote: “I will continue to allow him to participate in ceremonial activities that present no threat to the integrity of the game, provided that the activities are approved by me in advance”.
The Baseball Writers’ Association of America votes against allowing anyone on the sport’s permanently ineligible list from being inducted into the Hall of Fame. But he said he only did so as manager of the Reds and he only bet on the Reds to win.
“We and the fans think he deserves that opportunity”, he said.
That being said, I don’t care how many games Rose has bet on throughout his life, it didn’t change his performance on the field. Rose previously was banned back in 1989 and previous year Rose met with Manfred in Manhattan to discuss the situation.
The decision by Manfred, who succeeded Bud Selig as commissioner last January, was announced Monday.
In reviewing the original case against Rose, Manfred found evidence that he gambled on games in 1986, and perhaps in 1985, when he was a player-manager for the Reds.
