The move follows fellow supermarket Morrisons’ announcement last week that it would drop its petrol prices; the first time petrol prices have dropped so low since 2009.
And from midday Tesco – which has two petrol stations in Worcester – is also set to drop the price of unleaded petrol at all 500 of its petrol filling stations to 99.9p, along with a penny reduction in the price of diesel.
He claimed the average vehicle driver will now save £17 a week since the petrol price peak of May 2011. And their predictions have now become a reality with Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda and Morrisions all now offering fuel for the magic price.

An Asda spokesman said the temporary fuel price cap was not a loss leader but part of its customer-led festive pricing regime that began with its decision to pull out of Black Friday.
Asda then went one better, becoming the first of the supermarket giants to take the price to 99.7p per litre during a three-day price cut towards the end of November.
