New Sherlock trailer for Victorian Christmas special – but is this Gloucester Cathedral?
The newest Sherlock trailer gives a better look at our mysterious Abominable Bride and the Victorian-era England that our (usually) modern-day Sherlock and Watson are traipsing through in the Sherlock Christmas special.
The new installment in the Sherlock series has Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman going back to the roots of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. We’ve already seen stills and a trailer for the special, with impeccable-looking production design, but with the latest trailer, we get a more clear sense of what the title refers to and the seeming trajectory of the story itself.
The Victorian special is the first new “Sherlock” for two years, with the full fourth series scheduled to start shooting in the spring after Cumberbatch finishes filming Marvel’s “Doctor Strange”. “Which one can so rarely say of a morgue”, Cumberbatch says in the trailer. If there are any clues in this special as to what could be coming in season 4, we imagine that they will be of the Easter egg variety not directly related to the show as a whole.
Welcome to “Sherlock” in 1895! Friendship, adventure and especially, MURDER…Why is Thomas Ricoletti a little surprised to see his wife dressed in her old wedding gown? “Because, just a few hours before, she took her own life”, reads the official plot description for the episode.
Apparently, the “Abominable Bride” is Mr. Ricoletti’s ghost, who now appears with an unshakeable thirst for revenge.
Period-piece hats, facial hair, and horse-drawn carriages probably won’t make the leap to Sherlock’s fourth season, but it’s fun to watch creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat branch out.
