See who’s nominated in the 2016 Golden Globe Awards
“Carol”, a lesbian romance set in 1950s NY and starring Cate Blanchett, topped nominations for the Golden Globes on Thursday, as Hollywood’s awards season revs into high gear ahead of the all-important Oscars.
The nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced and social networks are full of comments.
I say this with some authority, having just dutifully put together several end-of-year lists: There is just no way to acknowledge all the quality shows and performances in groups of 10, much less five or six, even if you divide them up, as the Globes do, into comedy and drama.
The true outlier in the drama series category is “Narcos”, Netflix’s drama series about the rise of Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel.
Next, where do we put Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara? She was nominated for both best actress in a drama for her performance in The Danish Girl and best supporting actress as the human-seeming robot in Ex Machina.
Kate Winslet – Nominee for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture “Steve Jobs”: “I am completely over the moon and feel so honored to be nominated for a Golden Globe by the HFPA for this film”.
Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Steve Carell for “The Big Short”, Al Pacino for “Danny Collins”, Mark Ruffalo for “Infinitely Polar Bear” and Christian Bale for “The Big Short”.
The nominees for best actress in a comedy or musical are Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Amy Schumer (Trainwreck), Lily Tomlin (Grandma), and Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van).
The Big Short and Revenant both received four nominations; and Room, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Tarentino’s The Hateful Eight, and The Danish Girl each received three.
In the best foreign film category Belgian drama “The Brand New Testament”, “The Club” from Chile, Finland’s “The Fencer”, French movie “Mustang” and Hungarian project “Son Of Saul” are competing.
The Golden Globe nominees for TV movie or limited series have been announced in Beverly Hills, California. You don’t get nominated unless your actors are really top notch. Musical or comedy: Casual (Hulu), Mozart in the Jungle (Amazon), Orange is the New Black (Netflix), and last year’s victor, Transparent (Amazon). Despite this perceived advantage, 2015 marks the first time in 10 years that the network has not led the Golden Globes nominations race.
The nominees for best animated feature film: “Anomalisa, ” “Inside Out, ” “The Good Dinosaur, ” “The Peanuts Movie, ” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”. What we did in that movie is rare, we all went deep to serve the film and shine as a whole.
We’re also seeing a lot of television shows entering the competition with American Horror Story: Hotel and American Crime leading the pack. I don’t know if “Mad Max” will make it to the best picture round of the Oscars, but it certainly seems like George Miller is destined to get some recognition for his work. Now it’s up for three big awards (best drama, actress and supporting actor) for the second half of its first season. Not only that, but only Game of Thrones got a Globe nomination past year, despite the fact that the other four shows that did – The Good Wife, House of Cards, The Affair and Downton Abbey – are all still on.
