Los Angeles Unified schools closed due to threat
Bratton, who once ran the Los Angeles Police Department, quipped that it looked like the sender watched a lot of the Showtime show “Homeland”.
Officials with the San Diego County Office of Education raised concerns about copycat situations because of the proximity of the upcoming holiday vacation and advised administrators to be especially vigilant in assessing any threats that may be received.
Campuses in NY are remaining open.
“These threats are made to promote fear…we cannot allow us to raise the levels of fear”, New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton tweeted.
He said a school superintendent received the threatening email Tuesday morning.
Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti defended the closure. “This decision has been made by the School district in an abundance of caution”.
She got an automated phone call informing her of the closure.
“These days you can’t over-react”, Carlos Oliveros, whose grandson attends the school, told the Record.
He said he was particularly concerned given the recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino and Paris. The official was not authorized to disclose details of an ongoing investigation and provided the letter on condition of anonymity.
L.A. School Police confirmed that students who were already at schools were going to be sent home.
“I think it’s important to take this precaution based on what has happened recently and what has happened in the past”, LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said.
“It was not to one school, two schools or three schools, it was many schools, not specifically identified, but there were many schools”, Mr. Cortines said at a news conference, according to the Associated Press.
Zimmer said he would have families meet their children at the reunion gates of all schools.
The second-largest public school system in the nation shut down on Tuesday after officials received a threat against an unspecified number of its more than 900 campuses.
Zipperman says the threat is still being evaluated. If parents are unable to pick up their children, their emergency contact is allowed to pick them up as long as they have proper identification.
