Bill Cosby Suing His Accusers
Bill Cosby went on the offensive against seven of the women who have accused him of sexually molesting them. They made the accusations to hurt Cosby’s reputation and to obtain financial gain, Pressley said. Seven women – Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Joan Tarshis, Angela Leslie, Barbara Bowman – are suing Cosby for defamation after he hired a lawyer and publicist to deny their allegations, and it is this group that Cosby is now countersuing. “Each of the women induced both NBC and Netflix to postpone or cancel their contracts with Mr Cosby by engaging in a campaign to assassinate Mr Cosby’s reputation and character”. This countersuit comes after Cosby tried unsuccessfully to get [the] federal judge in MA to throw out their suit against him.
Total more than 50 women Cosby accused of sexual offenses.
More than 50 women have come forward to accuse the actor, best known for his role in the 1980s television hit The Cosby Show, of sexually assaulting them after plying them with drugs or alcohol.
Bill Cosby’s lawyers representing him in his counterclaims are John Egan from Massachusetts, Christopher Tayback of Quinn Emanuel in Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. attorney Monique Pressley. The countersuit claims that the women have “published multiple false statements and accusations” in an attempt to ruin Mr. Cosby’s reputation and “extract financial gains”.
His lawyers say that his reputation and career have been damaged by the women, noting that they filed their defamation lawsuit against Cosby at a time when he was set to return to television in a new NBC series.
As THR reports, the accusers attorney Joseph Cammarata calls this playbook behavior as a way to shift focus, and he wondered why Cosby is only going after these accusers, rather than going against the many others.
Seven of the women sued Cosby for defamation.
The women’s lawsuits were first filed in December 2014.
The comedian’s lawyer let the public know he’s countersuing for “intentional infliction of emotional distress”. “Such a tactic will not deter courageous women from fighting the battle against him”.
