Divers resume search of lake in shooting inquiry
– The focus of the San Bernardino investigation that left 14 people dead and 21 injured has moved to a lake three miles away from the Inland Regional Center.
Islamic militant groups ignored contact attempts from Pakistan-born Tashfeen Malik in the months before she and her husband killed 14 people at a California holiday party, probably because they feared getting caught in a US law enforcement sting, USA government sources said on Thursday.
The tearful mother of a man who authorities say bought some of the guns used in the San Bernardino shooting said her son is a good person. While they spoke with reporters, they also said they believe Marquez’s marriage was a sham.
The FBI had no comment on reports it may be a hard drive that the shooters wanted to destroy. Frank Kelly, of Victorville, Calif., pays his respects at a makeshift memorial near the Inland Regional Center, the site of last week’s fatal shooting that killed multiple people, Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, in San Bernardino, Calif.
“At this point we continue to investigate this case as a terror attack”, Bowdich said.
Farook and his wife were discussing jihad at least two years before they opened fire, Comey said during an appearance on Capitol Hill earlier in the week.
The account of a possible attack in 2012 came from Mr Enrique Marquez, a long-time friend and former neighbour of Farook’s, according to law enforcement officials who would speak only anonymously.
A federal investigation found that Marquez purchased the two AR-15 assault rifles that were used by Farook and Malik, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Monday.
Marquez reportedly checked himself into a mental health facility in Long Beach after the attack. Another FBI official said it didn’t seem like the two men had picked a target, and it is unclear how far along they were in the planning stage. He has not been charged with a crime.
“It’s safe to say that the information about what happened prior to their marriage and to the attacks in San Bernardino was acquired through forensic investigations of these individual lives”, Hurd said. That official says the woman did not appear for an interview earlier this week for her permanent resident application.
Farook and Malik travelled to the USA in July a year ago. The officials did not explain how they knew Malik made the post.
Though he said the Obama administration was not seeking to address concerns over data encryption on smartphones, he said he remained concerns that criminals, terrorists and spies were using such technology to evade detection.
While the militant group has since embraced the couple as among its followers, U.S. government sources have said there was no evidence Islamic State even knew of the couple before the San Bernardino killings.
A law enforcement source said investigators are focusing on how Malik obtained the K-1 fiancée visa that the United States issued so she could come to the country with Farook.
