Eagles stun Patriots 35-28 — Surprise
By shocking the football world with a 35-28 win over the New England Patriots that featured just two touchdowns scored by their offense, that message was clear.
These plays are obviously cherry-picked to illustrate a point, and exclude any missed calls that might have benefitted the Patriots, but some are particularly egregious.
But there’s enough playmakers and enough desire to at least keep them in a race for the retched NFC East crown right up to the end.
The Patriots spent part of Monday reviewing the film from their 35-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles the previous day.
Slater was especially complimentary of the next opposing coach the Patriots will face, Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans. There are no easy ones in that string, but they won’t play anybody better than the Patriots and their quarterback Tom Brady. That didn’t work out very well.
ABOUT THE EAGLES (4-7): While the absence of Bradford may partially explain the three-game skid, Philadelphia’s defense has been shredded for 45 points in each of the last two games by a pair of offenses that rank among the bottom half in the league. Then Darren Sproles capped it all off with a punt return for a touchdown to give the Eagles a two-score lead in the second half.
New England’s second onside kick failed, but the Patriots (10-2) forced a third-down fumble to give Brady one more chance. Bradford didn’t do anything spectacular.
Bradford, who has struggled on third down all season, completed 8-of-11 third-down passes against the Patriots, including two for touchdowns.
This was probably the first time this season Belichick made play calling mistakes. Malcolm Jenkins finally hung onto an interception, and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown.
“I’d be jogging from one drill to the next, and he’d just call my name and throw the ball at me”. “Once I figured I could get through the guard, I knew that I would just have to make sure that I finished the play”. Big plays, and a sudden lead over the powerhouse was no shock to some fans.
“When you have a blocked kick for a touchdown, an interception return for a touchdown and a punt return for a touchdown, it takes those things to win in this stadium against that coach and that quarterback”, he said. On the successful coverage was Rowe, who was making the first start of his career only because Nolan Carroll is out for the year.
“Everything that people said we can’t do we’ve done before”, safety Jenkins said.
“I’m going to do whatever I can, whether it’s blocking, catching, running”. “You talk about turning good into great”. By a lot (427 yards to 248).
It looked like the Patriots would go ahead in the third quarter, Brady marching them to the one-yard line of the Eagles thanks to a 24-yard gain by White on a wheel route.
The negative play came on first-and-goal at the Philadelphia 1 as the Patriots unsuccessfully tried to catch the Eagles off-guard with a hurry-up approach midway through the third.
Because for all their flaws, the Eagles proved without a doubt that lack of desire is not one of them.
Winston kept his flare for the dramatic going as he led the Bucs on a game-winning drive as he found Mike Evans for a six-yard score with 1:39 left to give Tampa a 23-19 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
