Oosthuizen rekindling love affair with St Andrews
Johnson was runner-up at the British Open in Sandwich in 2011 while the year before he was leading the U.S. PGA at Whistling Straights with one hole to play but was denied a play-off after being docked two shots for a rules infringement when he grounded his club in a bunker.
But the final round is on a knife-edge with 25 players separated by just five shots.
Now, he’s facing fresh doubts about his ability to finish off a major championship.
It will be only the second Monday finish in British Open history.
Equally surprising is that the 22-year-old Dunne has company.
Not only is he on course for the amateur’s silver medal after a nerveless 66, but he could yet become the first amateur to win the British Open since Bobby Jones 85 years ago.
Nine players were tied for sixth on nine under, including another amateur in American Jordan Niebrugge, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott, along with England’s Danny Willett, who led outright after 10 holes but drove out of bounds on the 14th.
They were at 12-under 204.
“I don’t see why not”, said Dunne, who is a lowly 80th in the world amateur rankings. “But whether I do or not, I’ll survive either way”.
Spieth’s only stumble so far came at the ninth, where he missed about a 5-foot putt to save par.
Paul Dunne is in a three-way tie for the lead after the third round of the British Open.
And so it was Spieth, a 21-year-old Texan with an uncanny sense of occasion, who brought the gray, old town to life in a mixture of sunshine and rain.
After completing a round that contained five birdies and a missed 8-foot putt for another birdie on the last, Day let his mind wander back to the 18th hole and the “best walk in golf“. He finished with a 66.
Monday will be the final round of British Open and we will all be watching where Dunne and Spieth end up down the stretch.
“I’m well capable of shooting the score that I need to win if everyone else doesn’t play their best”.
“I felt like I was playing well enough to win this event”, Woods said.
“I always wanted to shoot 65 on Sunday at an Open. It’s going to be hard”. People crowded 10 deep behind the fence on the 17th to watch, while John Daly and his fiancée were among those sitting on the veranda of the Old Course hotel to catch a glimpse. Marc Leishman flirted with a record-tying 63 until he made par on the closing hole.
Not that he’ll get too upset about missing his shot at history. The leaderboards were loaded with birdies, and seven players had at least a share of the lead at some point in the third round.
That’s what made Dustin Johnson’s collapse so shocking.
Day will be paired in the final round with Jordan Spieth, who’s one shot out of the lead and trying to win his third consecutive major. “I think obviously everyone within three, four shots has got a really good chance of winning, and it’s all about composure now and tomorrow really your thought process on how you’re going to handle the pressure”.
As he crossed the Swilcan Bridge on No. 18, Spieth was serenaded with “The Eyes of Texas” from fans and he could see his name on the iconic yellow scoreboard at the home of golf.
Look at him, and he seems as nondescript as any other young player in what has become a homogenous game. The last amateur to win any major was Johnny Goodman in the 1933 U.S. Open. Even during the long delay on Saturday, he said he hasn’t thought much about the slam.
