The Rockets Have Reportedly Acquired Ty Lawson From The Nuggets
Lawson would give the Rockets needed depth at point guard with Patrick Beverley, though is now dealing with off-the-court issues. Dorsey is capable of giving some nice, quality minutes of defense and rebounding, Papanikolaou actually played quite well before his injury last season and Nick Johnson might turn into a decent National Basteball Association player some day.
On its face, the deal seems to work for both teams.
One easy solution is having Lawson come off the bench as a sixth man – similar to the role another diminutive point guard, Isaiah Thomas, has carved out for himself with the Celtics.
Even without Lawson, Houston’s depth was insane.
As for the Nuggets, this is officially the start of a rebuild as the pressure is now on Emmanuel Mudiay to perform well, and there is already talk of him being favorite to win Rookie of the Year. Coming back to Houson is Lawson as well as a 2017 second round pick. He has the potential to be a key piece for Houston and if he can focus on basketball, I believe he is capable of helping the Rockets go all the way. He ranked third in assists per game, averaging just shy of ten, in the 2014-2015 campaign with the Denver Nuggets – a team that struggled mightily. And now he’s off to Houston, where the Rockets hope to have bought a talented player low.
The Rockets won’t be the Western Conference favorites heading into next season, but they’re certainly going to be in the same room with the Spurs, Warriors, Thunder and Clippers heading into next season. Expect the Nuggets to waive Prigioni once the deal is official. Randy Foye will help the Nuggets perimeter shooting this year, but it will likely be time for Denver to look for a better option at the two-guard once Foye’s contract runs out.
Denver, on the other hand, just wanted to move on. Yet another offseason, and he manages to undeniably improve his team, looking like he’s the lone chess player in a league full of checkers all-stars.
