Pebble Has Its Own Health App Now
Pebble isn’t traditionally thought of as a “health” company, but the startup took a step in that direction on Monday with the introduction of Pebble Health. Pebble says Health was developed with the help of researchers at Stanford University.
Pebble is catching up with the times, adding a fitness tracking technology to its smartwatch. Pebble Health is able to track daily activity and automatically detect sleep phases, displaying stats and insights right on the wrist. I’ve tried using it with the Misfit app as a pedometer, but Misfit doesn’t sync with Android so I gave up using my Pebble for activity tracking.
Pebble’s take on the pedometer sets your goals relative to your own personal average, so you won’t feel like a failure every time you fail to hit 10,000 steps.
Referencing images provided by Pebble, the health app seems to focus on steps, active time, and sleep.
Pebble Health will be available on the Pebble Time, Time Steel, and Time Round devices once users update the Pebble mobile app and the firmware for their watches. Finally, the company said it’s bringing the Pebble Time update to the rest of its lineup, which brings support for timeline and unlimited apps. The app will share the data to Apple’s Health app and Google Fit, where users can get a more granular view of their health data.
Pebble also announced that it will allow developers to build apps and watchfaces to create visualizations of the data early next year. The little bit of bad news is that this app will only be available for Pebble’s Time series of smartwatches, including the Pebble Time, Time Steel, and Time Round.
Unfortunately for owners of the original Pebble Classic and Pebble Classic Steel, they’ll miss out.
