Georgia Democratic Congressman Slams Iran Nuke Deal
President Barack Obama says the deal, which swaps sanctions relief for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program, is the best way to keep Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Xi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Obama earlier in the day, the Chinese ministry said in a statement.
Since before the deal was signed, leaders on Capitol Hill have insisted that a multilateral agreement with Iran constitutes a treaty, and therefore requires Congressional approval.
The draft resolution specifies that seven resolutions related to United Nations sanctions will be terminated when Iran has completed a series of major steps to curb its nuclear program and the worldwide Atomic Energy Agency has concluded that “all nuclear material in Iran remains in peaceful activities”.
On Monday, the UN Security Council endorsed the Iran deal, prompting fresh outrage from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
CBS News foreign affairs analyst Pamela Falk explained that, while Monday’s vote does make the Iran nuclear deal worldwide law, full implementation of the measures will be delayed for 90 days, to allow for the U.S. Congress’ consideration as promised by the Obama administration, which seems more of an afterthought. Then they are required to begin preparations so they are able to lift sanctions as soon as the IAEA verification report is submitted.
It said Iran would in any case never seek a nuclear bomb, “in line with the historic fatwa (religious decree) of supreme guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who has banned the use of weapons of mass destruction”.
A top-ranking Iranian general of the country’s Revolutionary Guard reacted Monday to the United Nations Security Council resolution – which is part of the groundbreaking nuclear agreement – saying that it crossed some “red lines” involving Iranian defenses.
In the council, ambassadors said the years of hard work on Iran should become a blueprint for how the world deals with other crises such as in Syria and Yemen.
Carter welcomed the opportunity to see firsthand what he said were the two principal challenges to US strategy in the Middle East: Iran’s “malign influence on the region, including through proxies like Hezbollah” as well as violent extremist groups such as Islamic State. The resolution leaves in place an arms embargo on conventional weapons for five years. The Security Council resolution will not completely lift all sanctions on Iran.
Zarif said Tuesday the United Nations resolution also opens the way for Iran to commercially trade its uranium. This procedure prevents any of the veto powers which negotiated the accord, such as Russian Federation and China, from blocking any snap-back of Iran sanctions.
