“Miracles have happened before, and we will probably need one again”, said Midtjylland coach Jess Thorup, whose side have already claimed one Premier League scalp after knocking out Southampton in the final qualifying round.

All three English clubs will be at home for the second leg because they were seeded.

Midtjylland were only formed in 1999 – the year United won the Champions League to complete a historic Treble – and are competing in Europe for the first time.

Louis van Gaal will be desperate to win some silverware with United this season, and the Europa League could be one of his last chances to do so.

Augsburg had never qualified for a major European competition before this season. They made the Europa League group stage by defeating Southampton in a play-off in August with a 2-1 win over Southampton.

Former Champions League winners Borussia Dortmund and Porto also meet while exciting ties feature Olympique de Marseille against Athletic Bilbao, Anderlecht v Olympiakos Piraeus, Shakhtar Donetsk against Schalke 04 and Lazio v Galatasaray.

Obviously, no team from the second group will want to be paired with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, the three presumed favourites.

United are scheduled to play there on Thursday 18 February with the return match at Old Trafford coming a week later on Thursday 25 February.
