MADISON, Wis. — Badger basketball head coach Bo Ryan announcement Tuesday
Bo Ryan announced tonight, after the Badgers beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Kohl Center, that he will be stepping down as head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers, effective immediately.
Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan retired after one last victory with the Badgers on Tuesday night, ending a successful run at the school and handing the program over to assistant Greg Gard. I brought this up to Barry back in April. He suggested me to take a while to think it over & I appreciated that.
Ryan had announced during the off-season that he would be retiring by the end of the season.
The Badger victory is also significant for head coach Bo Ryan, as he picked up his 364th victory as the UW Madison head coach, but his 747th win of his 32 year coaching career.
TEXAS A&M-CC (7-3) – Pye 0-3 0-0 0, Ali 4-13 3-4 12, Currie 2-7 0-0 4, Douvier 0-4 0-0 0, Thomas 5-10 1-2 12, Kilgore 3-6 3-4 10, Amin 1-2 0-0 2, Kocher 0-0 0-0 0, South 1-5 0-0 2, Toney 1-2 0-0 3, Juricek 1-2 0-2 2, Francis 1-4 0-0 2. While Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig are back, the Badgers lack depth and proven talent beyond those two.
Duke 99, Georgia Southern 65: Freshman Brandon Ingram had season highs of 26 points and 14 rebounds, and the seventh-ranked Blue Devils (9-1) won their seventh game in a row.
“I’ve never had more than a one-year contract in my entire career, so for me it’s never been about the pressure in that way”, said Gard, who recently turned 45. Wisconsin, meanwhile, has eight freshmen on the team, most in the nation. Gard has helped Ryan build Wisconsin into a Big Ten power.
On this night, however, Wisconsin did what they have neglected to do on multiple occasions already this season: fend off the upset. Ryan won it in his first season and has never finished lower than fourth in what has been a very tough conference in recent years.
A member of five Halls of Fame, Ryan has been enshrined into the Wilkes College Athletic Hall of Fame (2003), the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (2008), the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (2011), the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2011) and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame (2012). He guided the Badgers to consecutive Final Four bids in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
He now turns the program over to Gard, who spent 22 seasons alongside Ryan.
Wisconsin avoided the upset a second half surge as guard Kammron Taylor scored 24 points points in a 76-63 victory.
