Obama Calls For Patience As America Continues ‘Strong, Smart’ Approach to
President Barack Obama has warned Americans of a “new phase” of terror threats – days after the deadly shootings in San Bernardino.
According to the president, the global terror threat has entered a “new phase”. At the heart of the debate is whether the USA should send ground troops to fight ISIS and whether the war should be limited to ISIS territory in Syria and Iraq or extended to any nation where the militant group has supporters.
An undated combination of California Department of Motor Vehicles photos shows Tashfeen Malik, left, and Syed Farook, the husband and wife who died in a gunbattle with authorities after a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, Dec. 2, 2015. He called the shootings an “act of terrorism”, but said there was no evidence the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or part of a broader network in the U.S.
“The threat from terrorism is real but we will overcome it”, the US President said. “We see growing efforts by terrorists to poison the minds of people like the Boston Marathon bombers and the San Bernardino killers”.
“We can not turn against each other by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam”, Obama said.
“One of the things that we should do is continue to legitimize what mainstream Islam is all about and delegitimize what extremist rhetoric is going on”, Hopida says. Specifically, he called on Congress to prohibit people on the no-fly list from buying guns.
Obama also detailed the ways in which the US has already stepped up its efforts against ISIS, including training moderate Iraqi and Syrian forces, deploying more American special forces to the area and increased intelligence sharing with allies.
Why? Because the current president isn’t interested in a well-protected and confident citizenry – he understands that the bureaucrats and cronies running Washington thrive only when Americans are consumed with fear and uncertainty. Gauging the enormity of the problem, the world seems to be coming together to tackle the threat from the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.
Obama delivered a rare Oval Office address late Sunday aimed at calming national anxieties toward radical Islamic terrorism. They also criticized Obama for again proposing gun control proposals. That’s why what we heard tonight was so disappointing: “no new plan, just a half-hearted attempt to defend and distract from a failing policy”, Ryan said in a statement.
Urging “high-tech and law enforcement leaders to make it harder for terrorists to use technology to escape from justice”, he said: “We constantly examine our strategy to determine when additional steps are needed to get the job done”. Noting that the role and the place that those Muslims have in American society is critical to America’s success, he said because ultimately it will be Muslims in this country that will have to stand up and speak out against the extremist, radicalising forces inside their own community.
Conservatives have also taken issue with Obama’s refusal to use the phrase “radical Islam” which the White House says would confer on terrorists the legitimacy of a faith they have betrayed.
After the buildup of a prime-time address from the Oval Office – only the third in almost seven years as president – his 13-minute “stay the course” speech Sunday fell flat.
Another Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, tweeted his disparaging remarks.
