Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Says He is Free Of Cancer
Cancer patients once thought too old to undergo treatment can take new hope from former President Jimmy Carter, who at age 91 is effectively fighting the malignant disease with new two therapies, a top doctor says.
Carter announced from The Carter Center in Atlanta that he was diagnosed with Melanoma that had spread to his brain.
Carter made the announcement at a Sunday school class he was teaching at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.
“When I went [for an MRI] this week they didn’t find any cancer at all, So I have good news”. Mr. Carter said he is appreciative of all who prayed for him.
The treatment regimen started with surgically removing the cancerous tumor from the liver, which was followed by radiation treatment.
That was because the doctors had discovered cancer. “I’m ready for anything and looking forward to a new adventure”, he previously told reporters, shortly after his diagnosis. They lift a brake on the immune system and encourage it to recognize and attack cancer cells. Carter then told the attendees that his recent MRI scans showed no signs of cancer at all.
He also said he would continue to receive regular doses of the drug pembrolizumab, a new treatment that is part of a promising class of drugs that harness the body’s immune system to fight cancer.
Carter’s response to Keytruda is better than the average for most patients.
But just three days after disclosing that he had cancer, Carter resumed his Sunday school duties.
He has remained active, despite telling reporters in August that he would scale back on work at The Carter Center, the human rights organization he founded after leaving the White House.
