Coveted FCS QB transfer spurns Alabama for Oregon
Dakota Prukop of Montana State told Fox Sports on Tuesday he has made a decision to transfer to OR after visiting with the Ducks and Alabama.
That is one way in which this will differ from Adams’ situation.
Unlike Adams, who was late to fall camp after finally completing his undergraduate coursework in August, Prukop will be able to assimilate with his new teammates by enrolling at UO in January and participating in the winter strength and conditioning program. And they’re going to do great with or without me. But MSU went 5-6 and missed the FCS postseason. Having proved himself there, Adams chose to take advantage of the graduate transfer rule that allows players to transfer without penalty to finish their eligibility if they have already finished undergraduate work. It’s just not for everybody on the FCS level.
OR will try to replicate that success next season in another transitional year.
There are now three quarterbacks on Montana State’s roster, all of which were freshman this season – Jordan Hoy, Ben Folsom and Brady McChesney. Current Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich was hired by Kelly to become the new offensive coordinator in 2009, and then succeeded him as the head coach in 2013 when he left to coach the Philadelphia Eagles.
The dual threat quarterback threw for 3,025 yards, 28 touchdowns, 10 interceptions while completing 62.8-percent of his passes in 11 games this season. “They’ve been told all their lives they’re not good enough for FBS”.
Next season, Prukop figures to compete with Jeff Lockie, Taylor Alie, Morgan Mahalak and Travis Jonsen for the OR quarterback job. Obviously, successfully recruiting and developing starting quarterbacks within the program is the preferable path. Prukop said the system he ran at Montana State is similar to Oregon’s offense.
This is a major coup for the Ducks, as Prukop should step in and start for OR in 2016.
Prukop will follow in the footsteps of Vernon Adams, another Big Sky Conference quarterback who transferred to OR before the 2015 season from Eastern Washington. But you’re more excited about Oregon.
