Air India technician dies in freak accident
Mumbai: A technician of Air India was been killed after he was sucked into a plane engine at Mumbai Airport on Wednesday night.
The aircraft, AI 619, was at a parking bay at the airport’s T2 Terminal and was preparing for departure to Hyderabad.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VIII) Virendra Mishra said the AI flight was scheduled to depart at 7:30 pm, but was delayed due to some technical reasons.
The incident occurred during the pushback of a flight, said the tweet, which was attributed to Air India chief Ashwani Lohani.
The firm said it was “deeply saddened” by what it called a “mishap”.
The staffer’s identify was yet to be ascertained as the body has been virtually reduced to shreds, said an official.
We will update this story with more information as and when we get it.
The airline has ordered an investigation into the incident, the Times of India reports. It was not immediately clear how the technician came so perilously close to the aircraft at that time.
It is not yet known whether passengers were on board at the time of the tragedy.
