The Golden State Warriors’ First Loss Came During The Perfect Storm
They’re not used to losing.
As the reigning NBA champions marauded their way through November, shattering the record for most consecutive wins to start a season, basketball observers started wondering if the Golden State Warriors had a shot at the all-time best season, 72 wins and just 10 losses, which Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls achieved during the 1995-1996 season. “We didn’t have it tonight”, said Luke Walton, the Warriors’ in Luke Walton, the Warriors’ interim coach.
“The schedule and the road trip kind of caught up with us”.
Golden States’ streak stands as the second longest in league history and the longest to start a season. The record of 33 regular wins was set in the 1971-72 season and was halted by the Bucks as well.
Saturday’s loss also ended an emerging debate over how to calculate the Warriors’ winning streak. They’ve been a hit overseas, where viewership for Sunday games increased 32 percent last season over 2013-14, when the games weren’t being shown at a consistent time. This was no squeaker at the buzzer, but a Bucks runaway at the end.
“He’s this generation’s Jordan”, Milwaukee’s coach Jason Kidd said. “And so, for us, we didn’t talk about the streak, it was about playing the world champs”. Stephen Curry scored 28 points, but the Warriors didn’t make enough shots one night after winning a double-overtime game. On the other hand for Warriors, Stephen Curry scored 28 points, while Draymond Green contributed 24 points and 11 rebounds.
It also helped that the Warriors, perhaps fighting fatigue after needing two overtimes to win at Boston on Friday, were cold from 3-point range.
Confidence won’t be a problem with Golden State.
But the Bucks had an answer each time. Monroe managed 28 points on, according to NBA.com, only 58 touches.
“But our goal was always to get better each and every time we get on the floor, whether that’s practice or whether that is in the game”. “They didn’t shut us down, man. No one shuts us down”. “But for 48 minutes, I don’t think anybody can say we played as hard as they did”.
Bucks fans at the Harris Bradley Center, which was packed by 18,700 spectators, erupted with cheers after the final buzzer.
While Green was all over the place netting 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks.
Walton said his team was slow on defensive rotations, and that 16 turnovers were costly.
Milwaukee has held seven of its last nine opponents under 100 points, including becoming the first team this season to prevent Golden State from reaching triple digits.
Most Warriors said they didn’t feel any added pressure during the run.
Instead, Boston won its 10th straight second night of a back-to-back game on the road, dating back to last season’s All-Star Break.
The Bucks have clamped down on defense of late after struggling the first few weeks of the season. With recent injuries to two starters in Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes, the Warriors main focus will be to make it into the playoffs at full strength.
“Not from me. Losing sucks”. A raucous Bucks cheering section proved prophetic after wearing green “24-1” shirts to the game. But it is nearly like a sense of relief.
So…which one was more impressive?
Notes: PGs Jerryd Bayless and Greivis Vasquez will not accompany the Bucks on the West Coast trip.
