Obama to visit San Bernardino Friday, White House says
President Barack Obama will visit and mourn with the families of the victims in the San Bernardino shooting on Friday. Obama will stop in Southern California while on his way to Hawaii for Christmas vacation. White House officials have previously said that any presidential visit – like others to communities affected by mass shootings – would take local memorial plans into account.
That meant that they worked with Syed Farook, the man who, joined by his wife Tashfeen Malik, used assault rifles to kill them.
Farook and Malik died in a shootout with police a few hours later. Republicans have criticized them for linking the shooting to the Second Amendment when it’s being investigated as a terrorist attack by two radicalized Muslims. Fourteen were killed and 22 were injured. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.
In a rare speech from the Oval Office following the attacks, the President pledged to overcome the threat of terrorism.
The attack has made Americans increasingly nervous about their security. Obama has also called on Congress to pass legislation to block firearm sales to people whose names are on the federal no-fly list for air travel.
Mr. Obama later said the day of the shooting was the toughest day of his presidency.
