Chuck Pagano: “Fully anticipate” Matt Hasselbeck being ready for Sunday’s game
Luck missed his sixth start Sunday, his fourth in a row since suffering a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle. Not having your franchise quarterback leading the team is a detriment, but it’s also not like Luck was having that great of success when healthy either.
“When you take time off, it takes a little more time to get back into it”, Luck said of the conditioning aspect for his rehab. Bortles threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns and the running game accounted for 154 yards in 29 carries and two scores.
A unit that last week couldn’t keep rookie QB out of the end zone – including an 87-yard TD run – shut down the Colts and sparked the Jaguars to a. It snapped the Jags’ six-game losing streak to the Colts and ended the Colts’ 16-game division winning streak.
“We’ve had some tough, tough losses over the course of four years, and this one stings”, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said.
So far, there is no indication Luck will be cleared to play against his hometown Texans. That’s why it is so important that Hasselbeck is available, and it sounds like Chuck Pagano expects him to be on Sunday against the Texans.
Luck has continually increased his workout regimen. They were 7-for-30 on third-down the past two weeks. Last week, he said he was running sprints after practice with teammates.
Luck met the media on Monday after he earlier rehabbed by doing some throwing, lifting of weights and conditioning. He still must be cleared to play in games.
“I do not feel like I’m 100 percent back from prior injury”, Luck said. I’m not embarrassed because Jacksonville has pro players. Matt Hasselbeck completed 18 of 35 passes for 252 yards to lead the Colts. He said that Hasselbeck’s left arm is in a sling because it helps with spasms in his rib area and that the team hopes to have him on the practice field this week. “He’s banged up, like a lot of the guys”. “I don’t know how many games we’re back, but anything’s possible”. “In my mind, the urgency has not changed”. Charlie Whitehurst would start if Luck and Hasselbeck can’t play.
The news isn’t all bad. He said even if he does practice that doesn’t indicate he will play Sunday, as it’s up to the coaching staff and training staff to make that determination. Jerrell Freeman has missed the past two weeks.
The Colts’ postseason hopes would be dead if they played in any other division.
The Jaguars (5-8) are set to host the Falcons (6-7) at 1 p.m. Sunday at EverBank Field in Jacksonville.
The Jaguars played their most complete game against the Colts, scoring on offense, defense and special teams for the first time since 2011.
Vic Beasley recorded his third sack of the season Sunday, against the Carolina Panthers in a game that he had two total tackles and two total quarterback hits.
“We showed it in spurts all season, but the main thing was that we weren’t consistent”, receiver Allen Hurns said. This was not expected to be a passing offense with Brian Hoyer at the helm, but they have done just that and been fairly successful with it. “We always have talked about we want to be a team that’s fairly balanced”, Bradley said. We’re not sitting here saying, ‘Oh my god, how are we going to win a game?’ It’s just like, ‘We need to do what we know how to do.’ We’re a team that can win games.
Wednesday’s practice should provide some answers on the quarterback front.
