Army takes halftime lead on long TD catch by Edgar Allan Poe
This will be the last game for Keenan Reynolds in a Navy uniform as the senior is the only quarterback to start all four seasons while at Navy, as well as being the only Navy quarterback to defeat Army four consecutive times.
Army has won two games as it plays in the second season under coach Jeff Monken. In the end, Navy and the Midshipmen sang second, sending Army home for another long, dark bus ride to West Point.
On Saturday, Army and Navy met for the 116th time, and for the 14th game in a row, the Midshipmen claimed bragging rights over the Black Knights. Army QB Chris Carter completed 9-of-15 passes for 208 yards and a score with a pick, but was held to 18 yards on 22 carries. He also threw for 113 yards on 6-14 passing. “I’m not exactly sure where that’s going to end up”.
Reynolds has 85 career touchdowns, which is the most for any NCAA Division I player. It was the first time Army led Navy at halftime since 2009. He scrambled for 35 yards on the drive. Army called a trick play with senior wide receiver DeAndre Bell receiving a pass behind the line of scrimmage and then throwing the ball downfield to Campbell. Reynolds has thrived on the national stage as one of the best college football players this season and he will prove that once again as the Navy aim to keep their streak alive against Army.
Army should be frustrated by this defeat because it gave away opportunities, especially with a missed field goal and three turnovers in the fourth quarter, including two by Carter, which prevented the Black Knights from putting pressure on Navy. Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Eagles and Temple football, will be stuffed with cadets and midshipmen standing, bouncing and cheering the entire game Saturday.
Many didn’t expect such a tight game, especially after Reynolds sprinted to a 58-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter giving the Midshipmen a 7-3 lead.
Army, which led at the half, was able to muster just 89 yards in the second half on 30 plays. This is the biggest game of the year.
The Black Knights have come tantalizingly close to winning in three of the past four meetings with Navy: 27-21 in 2011, 17-13 the next year, and 17-10 last December. We have to channel that and use it in a positive manner going into this game against Navy. I could not do that to these kids. A win against Pittsburgh in the bowl game will give Navy its first 11-win season. The Midshipmen are 55-4 during that same stretch when taking a lead into the fourth quarter.
Niumatalolo is reportedly scheduled to visit BYU on Monday to hear what BYU leaders have to say and potentially offer. Find out where to watch the Army vs Navy game on TV as well as live online streaming via the Internet and mobile phones just ahead.
