Spain prime minister slapped in head at campaign appearance
As unemployment has a huge impact on the younger population, one 17-year-old nutter took matters into his own hands and made a decision to clock Rajoy in the head, doing his best Conor McGregor impression.
A video of the incident shows the youth, wearing a black jacket and sporting a crew cut, punching the prime minister hard on the left side of his face before being wrestled to the ground.
Police immediately arrested and detained the teenager, RTVE said, and plan to charge him with attacking federal authorities while on active duty.
Although Rajoy was born in Santiago de Compostela, the Prime Minister’s hometown is often regarded as Pontevedra, the capital of Galicia, because he grew up, married, and started his political career there.
Rajoy later appeared, smiling but without his glasses, at a campaign appearance in the nearby city of A Coruna.
Especially considering he later told the newspaper El Pais, “I’m glad I did it”.
Development Minister Ana Pastor tweeted confirmation of the incident Wednesday evening in front of a church in the northern city of Pontevedra. “I want to condemn the intolerable aggression Mariano Rajoy has suffered”, he said.
Mr Rajoy’s ruling People’s Party is expected to win the election, even though it has presided over one of the worst economic slumps in decades.
