Canada PM Trudeau calls Trump’s rhetoric ignorant
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will ask the Pope to apologize for the role that the Catholic church played in the physical and sexual abuse of indigenous children who attended one of Canada’s church-run Indian residential schools.
Trump, a U.S. Republican presidential candidate, has come out railing against Islam, and proposed banning all Muslims from immigrating to the United States.
“However, I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that I stand firmly against the politics of division, the politics of fear, the politics of intolerance or hateful rhetoric”.
“Painting ISIS and others with a broad brush that extends to all Muslims is not just ignorant, it is irresponsible”.
Muslims, he said are the greatest victims of terrorist acts around the world.
“We didn’t want to have a meeting so we can set up more meetings so we can celebrate in a gathering the fact that we’ve had meetings and we’re going to have more meetings”, Trudeau said after what he called “a historic meeting” on Parliament Hill with leaders from five national aboriginal organizations.
Trudeau was asked what he would tell Trump if he could “sit down and talk to him”.
Instead, Trudeau said the last decade in Afghanistan has given Canadian military the experience they need to train local troops.
Fear, he adds, doesn’t make anyone safer.
Trudeau dismissed criticisms from both journalists and the public that his governing style was soft-spoken and relied heavily on charm. “We need to be able to settle them in robust and substantive conversations”, he said, when asked about an ongoing case in which the government is fighting to keep survivors of residential schools in Newfoundland and Labrador from claiming compensation that was available to former students in other parts of the country.
“It’s a mistake to equate understanding “soft power” with weakness”.
After promising to stop the Conservative government’s plan to end home delivery of the mail, he now says there are “legitimate questions” about the service Canadians expect from Canada Post.
Earlier, when it was mentioned that he had seen the film with a group of children, he reacted with a smile.
“You can spend a lot of time talking about hypotheticals and I’m not going to engage in that”, he said.
One Canadian had a very specific fashion question: why does he always wear the same shoes?
