Students in Los Angeles Back in School After Terror Threat
Rep. Adam Schiff, the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said earlier Tuesday that “the preliminary assessment is that it was a hoax or something created to disrupt school districts in large cities”.
The Los Angeles Unified School District comprises more than 21,000 buildings spread over 720 square miles (1,865 square kilometers) within Los Angeles and nearby communities.
Back in Los Angeles, district Superintendent Ramon Cortines defended the decision to cancel school Tuesday.
A similiar threat received by New York City schools was not considered credible and authorities there did not close schools.
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said extra police officers would be deployed at city schools on Wednesday in part to manage jitters following the closure.
Southern California, he added, “has been through a lot in the recent weeks”. Should we put our children through the same thing?’ He said the email’s “implied threat” involved explosive devices and the “specific threat” was a shooting attack using “assault rifles” and “machine pistols”.
Officials there eventually learned about the similar threat sent to Los Angeles, making both far less credible, Sherman said.

On the other hand, school board President Steve Zimmer said cooperation of the families and neighbors will be needed to secure the safety of the students. NY has invested heavily in homeland security and terrorism response, which might make it easier to process how big a threat is, he said.
In LA, the threat came in the form of an email to a school board member.
“One passage in the email sent to New York City’s School Superintendent had read: “(Students) at every school in the district will be massacred, mercilessly. Los Angeles police say the 17-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a city…
“What’s it’s going to come down to is our basic police cars… will be assigned to go by every hour or maybe every other hour to give extra patrol, high visibility around the school area”.
There were clues that tipped the NY officials.
“The New Yorkers were wrong to criticize us”, Vasquez said Wednesday after dropping off her 8-year-old daughter at school.
“Thanks to the extraordinary effort by Los Angeles Unified School Police and our law-enforcement partners, all L.A. Unified schools and charters have been inspected and Chief Steven Zipperman has given the all-clear for students to return to campus”, the district said in a statement.
If you do end up trying to, by perhaps, beefing up security, or canceling classes for the day, it won’t matter. As a matter of fact, People shared that some parents didn’t even know what to do, just like a certain Rosa Outar who is a mother of three and works as a front desk clerk in a hotel.
