In an interview with CBS during a trip to the Middle East, Carter called it “a mistake and it’s entirely my own”.
After taking questions from reporters on March 1, 2013, Chuck Hagel introduced Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

Using personal email on unsecured servers leaves the messages vulnerable to hacking and other cyberattacks.
U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter used to use a private email account for some official business, the Pentagon acknowledged on Wednesday night.
“The Secretary does not directly email anyone within the Department or the USA government except a very small group of senior advisers, usually his chief of staff”, Cook said.
He continued this practice for at least two months after it was publicly revealed that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used a personal email server during some of her tenure.
They have alleged that the administration has not handled government information with care. Mrs. Clinton has said she didn’t knowingly share classified information.
The use of personal email has dogged Democratic presidential front-runner Clinton since February and prompted an FBI investigation. No one is suggesting he shouldn’t use email at all, but fine.
The Pentagon issued an announcement saying Carter has done nothing incorrectly.
He said that Mr Carter had stopped the practice, but did not say when.
“He does have a personal email account that he uses to correspond primarily with friends and family”.
The Times report said the 72 emails obtained were exchanges about a variety of matters, including speeches, meetings and news media appearances, that took place between Carter and his chief of staff at the time, Eric Fanning, who is now the acting Army secretary. His team provides him with secure classified information, at times as hard copies. “He is confident that his work-related email has been and will continue to be preserved within the federal records system”. Clinton has turned over some 55,000 pages of emails to the State Department. The use of a personal email account for government work violates US Defense Department rules, adopted in 2012.
