Whoa! Kendrick Lamar Just Slayed the 2016 Grammy Nominations
Scarborough native The Weeknd continues to dominate the worldwide music scene, scoring seven Grammy Award nominations for his album Beauty Behind the Madness.
Just because critically acclaimed and popular rapper Kendrick Lamar garnered the most nominations by far, with 11, that doesn’t necessarily suggest he’ll be the big victor when the Grammys are given on February 15 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Lamar topped everybody with 11 nominations.
Meanwhile, Album Of The Year is looking at Best Alternative Music Album and Best Country Album possibles “Sound & Color” by Alabama Shakes and “Traveller” by Chris Stapleton respectively.
The nominees for record of the year are “Blank Space” (Swift), “Uptown Funk!“. Written by Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose, the hit single competes against songs by Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and Ed Sheeran.
Justin was infamously beaten in the Best New Artist category by jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding in 2011, and in the same year, his album My World 2.0, lost out to Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster in the Best Pop Vocal Album genre.
Swift isn’t the only singer to receive seven nominations.
Traditionally, the nominees tend to be older, more mainstream artists, but this year showed a surprising departure from the norm.
“To Pimp a Butterfly”, Lamar’s first album in almost three years, is unusually innovative for such a commercially anticipated album with long sections of unaccompanied spoken word, frequent historical allusions and jazzy interludes.
Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow praised the diversity of the field.
Best new artist: Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly, Meghan Trainor. Indo-British director Asif Kapadia features in the nominees list of Best Music Film category for Amy, his documentary on late singer Amy Winehouse.
In the classical categories, local nominees include conductor Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for best orchestral performance; composer Andrew Norman, conductor Gil Rose, and Boston Modern Orchestra Project for best contemporary classical composition; and both Boston Baroque and Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra in the best opera recording category. She won album of the year with “Fearless” in 2010. You can bet she’ll be all over the 2017 Grammys.
