Sports WebXtra: Johnny Manziel improving with every game
Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel runs to the locker room after his team defeated the 49ers 24-10 in an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, in Cleveland.
Manziel passed for 270 yards, delivering a quality performance the Browns (3-10) desperately needed.
Manziel was back on the field after being benched two games by Pettine for partying during Cleveland’s bye week after he had promised not to be a distraction.
More details in the video.
And after going more than two months to the day between victories, the Browns (3-10) enter the final three weeks of the regular season anxious to build on the success they had against the 49ers when they take on the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs on the road before returning to Cleveland for the finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, all of whom are in the hunt for the postseason. “That’s a credit to that group and the pass rush plan (defensive line coach) Anthony Weaver put together for those guys, and they went out and executed”.
If after last week’s shocking overtime win against the Bears we were anxious the 49ers looked just good enough for Jed York to rationalize keeping Jim Tomsula and Geep Chryst on the coaching staff, I think we can rest easy after yesterday’s disaster of a game against one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Manziel received support from a running game that has underachieved for the vast majority of this season.
The running back who replaced the Australian, Kendall Gaskins, suffered a concussion in the 49ers’ humiliating loss on Sunday (NZT Monday) to the Cleveland Browns. The Browns need to decide if Manziel is or not.
Manziel is now 2-4 as an National Football League starter, including 2-2 this season.
“It felt good to knock off the rust”, Kilgore said.
First of all, it’s hard to view San Francisco as a significant challenge for anyone with Cleveland, including Manziel.
To take it a step further, Manziel’s rookie year was basically a throw-away.
Before the the game Sunday, he took a lap around the stadium to mingle with fans. “I didn’t see an effort problem”.
“I’d have to disagree with Joe on that”, he said. “It’s a tribute to our leadership”, Pettine said. Pettine said WR Brian Hartline will likely have surgery Tuesday to fix his broken collarbone sustained Sunday.
“I’m not sitting here saying we’re going to win them all, but I can tell you for sure that we’re going to come out and we’re going to fight”. And it sounds like Manziel they love what they are seeing from the young signal-caller and getting behind him. He started the next game, got hurt early, and didn’t play again. Instead, over a relatively short time, Manziel has improved as a pocket passer and has seemingly gotten better at extending plays to make completions. WR Taylor Gabriel is expected to be back this week after missing three games with a concussion.
