Neighbor of San Bernardino Shooter Likely to Be Charged, Sources Say
He made no mention of any charges being filed. The FBI would not confirm that report when contacted by Courthouse News.
Enrique Marquez, 24, is accused of buying two assault rifles for Syed Rizwan Farook that ended up being used in the December 2 attack that left 14 dead, the network added.
Immediately after the attack the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided home of Marquez and questioned him for several days. Marquez also checked himself into a mental health facility.
Students in Florida, Texas and California headed to school as usual Thursday, hours after officials said districts received threats similar to those that closed Los Angeles’ massive school system earlier this week.
Enrique Marquez has been arrested by federal agents on weapons charges related to the San Bernardino shootings.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama is set to visit San Bernardino tomorrow to meet with shooting the victims and their family members. Marquez told investigators he purchased the guns for Farook, his former neighbor, after he claimed he would not pass a background check, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
Marquez also told investigators that he and Farook were planning a terror attack in 2012, and that the two abandoned their plans in part because they were spooked by the arrests of four Riverside-area men charged with attempting to travel overseas to carry out jihad, officials told CNN on condition of anonymity. He and Farook had known each other for years; Marquez allegedly converted to Islam around 2008.
Neighbors said Marquez and Farook often worked together on cars in Farook’s garage in their younger years but that the friendship had cooled in the past three years. Tashfeen Malik came to the USA last summer on a K-1 visa in July 2014 and passed multiple background checks and at least two in-person interviews, one in Pakistan and another after she married Sayed Farook.
When asked about Syed Farook, she said her son was friends with him and “nothing more”.
Marquez’s mother and brothers declined earlier this month to discuss the investigation, but friends of Marquez told ABC News he is a “great guy”. He was hired to work at Wal-Mart in May but has since been fired, a company spokesman said.
