Ex-US House Speaker Dennis Hastert recovering from stroke
The sentencing of Dennis Hastert’s federal hush money case might have to be postponed for a while; his lawyers announced today that the Former House Speaker has been recovering from a stroke for the past six weeks. In October, Hastert plead guilty to evading bank reporting laws by withdrawing money used to hide various misconduct.
The former speaker is awaiting sentencing in a federal hush-money case.
The Republican politician also suffered from sepsis, a life-threatening side effect of infection, and underwent two back surgeries. He suffered a stroke and was treated for Sepsis.
“While in the hospital, two surgeries on his back were performed”, Green said.
A letter recently written to the judge in Dennis Hastert’s hush-money trial indicates that he was recently hospitalized.
“In light of his recent hospital stay, I would hope that probation in lieu of confinement would be considered in determining his sentence”, businessman William Pollard wrote.
He is scheduled to be sentenced February 29.
Dallas Ingemunson, who is a former state’s attorney from Kendall County, where Hastert is from, told the AP in November that Hastert had been admitted to an Aurora hospital but did not know the extent of his medical issues beyond a “foot problem”.
The Associated Press reported in July 2006 that Hastert was hospitalized for cellulitis, a skin condition.
He served in House leadership for over a decade, including seven years as Speaker, from 1999 to 2007.
Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert arrives Tuesday at the federal courthouse in Chicago. He adds that Hastert “was known as a man of integrity”. The Justice Department alleges that Hastert made large withdrawals after he agreed to pay an unnamed subject $3.5 million.
