Hillary Clinton Makes Appearance In Omaha
Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway – commonly referred to as the oracle from Omaha – joined Clinton at her first event in Nebraska and hosted a fundraiser for her campaign before the rally.
Her latest visit came on the day the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in almost a decade, so, the Democratic front runner was talking taxes and national security at a Town Hall event in Iowa City.
Omaha, Nebraska (CNN)Standing with Warren Buffett, one of the world’s richest men, Hillary Clinton on Wednesday backed his namesake rule, arguing that those who make more than $1 million a year should be required to pay higher tax rates.
The trip to Southern California will be the sixth for the 68-year-old Clinton since she declared her candidacy on April 12. “And I don’t do that easily”. Democrats believe Buffett is a rare advantage that holds a dual appeal on Wall Street and Main Street. The investment guru’s annual shareholder meeting is dubbed “Woodstock for Capitalists” and drew an overflow crowd of more than 40,000 people from around the globe in the spring.
“What he brings to the table is that he’s one of the few highly-respected business people who average people view as one of them”, said Marc Lasry, a NY hedge fund manager and Democratic donor, in an interview.
President Obama proposed the Buffett rule in 2011 and pitched it again this year, but has gotten no traction in the Republican-led Congress. Buffett said he had watched all of the Republican presidential debates and Clinton was a better choice for voters.
“That’s a primary reason – there’s a lot of other reasons, but it’s a primary reason – why I’m going to be so delighted when Secretary Clinton takes the oath of office”, Buffett said.
Clinton said last week that billionaires like Buffett are using corporate inversions to “game the system” and said that their actions are “offensive” to everyday taxpayers. It only alienates Muslim Americans, she said, who have already been on the front lines of the fight against terrorist groups.
As Mr. Obama envisioned the rule, taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes exceeding $2 million would pay a minimum tax of 30%.
“This district will be in play in 2016”, Buffett said, “and one vote could be important”.
He also singled out Republican front-runner Donald Trump for bragging “every five minutes” about how smart he is. According to a recent Monmouth University poll, 59% of Sanders supporters said they’d “be okay” if Sanders lost and Hillary Clinton won the nomination.
And then there’s the money.
Clinton said the United States should expect more terrorist attacks and must enlist the help of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to identify potentially radicalized individuals on social media platforms. It was all very smart, confident, and at moments – such as when she told the story of a Muslim soldier who sacrificed himself to save others from a auto bomb – even poignant. “I would not write a huge check”.
