Confusion, Traffic Congestion As Pro-Biafran Agitators Protest In Lagos
With reference to the announcement by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), that pro-Biafra protest was held in Lagos State yesterday and today, major roads in the state were shut down.
The judge said Kanu’s continued detention after three months without trial, violated section 158 of theAdministration of Criminal Justice (ACJ) Act 2015 and section 35 of the 1999 Constitution.
SaharaReporters spoke with Mr. Obetta by phone when he confirmed that the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ruled that Mr. Kanu be released unconditionally.
Ruling on a bail application filed by his lawyer, Mr. Vincent Egechukwu Obeta, Justice Ademola also set aside an order earlier granted the DSS to detain Kanu for 90 days to enable the security agency complete its investigation.
But the APC has asked the State Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni to deal ruthlessly with anybody or group found to be involved in such protests, and expressed the hope the law enforcement agencies in Lagos will not be tested during this time.
Some of the protesters who spoke to journalists said they would continue to struggle for the actualisation of Biafra.
Reacting to the incident, Chairman of the Fundamental Rights League International (FRLI), Mr. Mike Umezulike, told THISDAY that the procession by IPOB members was peaceful and wondered why the soldiers shot at harmless people.
“It would also end the orgy of protests by Biafra agitators which had ravaged most states in the defunct Eastern region”.
“For too long, the Yoruba have accommodated all other tribes and nationalities like good hosts”.
“The recent infractions of the Fulani cattle-herders in Yorubaland are the last slap to the cheek that we are ready to accommodate as a people”.
He accused the federal government of marginalising and killing thousands of ethnic Igbos living in the north.
In its reaction to the release of Kanu, the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), which has been calling for Kanu’s release, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for listening to the pleas of Ndigbo and progressive Nigerians. – Gen Kay Isiaku, that the state government would work closely with the command to achieve desired peace in the area.
