Buyer of guns in attack faces terror charges

Marquez purchases the two assault rifles that are later used in the San Bernardino attack.

Authorities say Marquez has told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he and Farook talked about conducting some kind of attack years earlier but called it off after unrelated terrorism arrests in Southern California.

The FBI is still working to verify the validity of that scenario.

The activity in the case comes one day before President Obama was scheduled to arrive in San Bernardino to meet with survivors of the carnage.Marquez assisted authorities in identifying Farook’s radicalization process to a period before he began communicating with Malik online, more than two years before the San Bernardino attacks. “According to Marquez, his priority was to shoot law enforcement personnel before shooting life-saving personnel”.

He posted: “I’m. Very sorry sguys”.

Little else is known about Marquez-he checked himself into a mental hospital shortly after the San Bernardino shooting.

Marquez called 911 hours after the massacre and said that he wanted to commit suicide because his neighbor had “used my gun in the shooting”. The men were convicted and sentenced to prison. Farook asked Marquez to purchase the weapons on his behalf because he did not want them traced to him and doubted he could pass a background check, the sources said. The prosecutors also blamed Marquez for defrauding immigration authorities by pretending to be married to Farook’s relative.

Marquez was charged with illegally purchasing the rifles that the shooters used again hours later in a gunbattle with police.

Marquez went so far as to draw a map for investigators, showing just how they planned to commit the attack, they said. The sisters are from Russian Federation and came to the United States on J-1 visas – commonly used for educational and cultural programs – according to a federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. That made Marquez and Raheel Farook brothers-in-law and gave Marquez and Syed Rizwan Farook a sister-in-law in common.

Meanwhile, FBI Director James Comey said there was no evidence that the attackers had been part of a terrorist cell.

When she visited him in the hospital two days later, he again referred to Syed Rizwan Farook by an expletive and said he did not know “he was going to do that”, Anderson said in the affidavit.

In August 2011, Farook told Marquez of his interest in joining al-Qaida. Though Farook ended up moving to another neighborhood earlier this year, the two remained close and would often work on cars in Marquez’s driveway, according to one of his neighbors.

– Farook and Malik leave their 6-month-old daughter with his mother and say they are headed to a doctor’s appointment. Neighbours said they were surprised to learn he had been married, having never seen him with a woman.

Those rifles were eventually used in the deadly attack on the Inland Regional Center that killed 14 people and injured more than 20.

Marquez converted to Islam several years ago and for a time worshiped at a mosque in Corona.
