Twisted San Bernardino terrorist plotted more mass atrocities
He is suspected of buying rifles used by his friend, Syed Rizwan Farook, and Farook’s wife, Tashfeen Malik, in the December 2 mass shooting that left 14 people dead in the Southern California city.
Marquez was also charged with the unlawful purchase of the two assault rifles used in the shooting on December 2 carried out by US-born Farook and his Pakistani wife Tashfeen Malik, in what the FBI is investigating as a terrorist attack.
While the conspiracy charge doesn’t specifically accuse Marquez of having any advanced knowledge of the San Bernardino plot, FBI investigators said he and Farook did acquire the firearms with the intent of carrying out some type of violent attack – which they allegedly began discussing in 2011.
But the charges made public today reveal the 24-year-old Marquez and his long-time friend and former next door neighborhood, Syed farook, first planned to use the weapons and pipe bombs to attack the ca cafeteria of a community college in late 2011 or early 2012.
The arrest marks a major development in the San Bernardino case being investigated by authorities as a terrorist assault – the deadliest since the Sept 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Marquez is reportedly a recent convert to Islam. Among the plots they allegedly hatched, a plan to trap drivers during rush hour and then unleash their terror.
The immigration fraud count against Marquez stems from his “sham” marriage to a member of Farook’s extended family, enabling her to obtain US residency, for which Marquez was paid $200 a month, prosecutors said.
The FBI said Farook and Malik were supporters of Islamic State, the violent group that has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq, and that they had discussed martyrdom online before they even met.
Authorities previously said Marquez had legally purchased the guns Farook and Malik used.
Pym asked Marquez questions pertaining to the complaint and whether there were any errors concerning his name, address and information contained on his financial affidavit.
Enrique Marquez is accused of plotting to carry out attacks in 2011, including throwing pipe bombs on a California highway and targeting Riverside Community College. Marquez purchases the two assault rifles that are later used in the San Bernardino attack.
Marquez began speaking with federal authorities after they raided his mother’s home over the weekend.
Marquez was charged with illegally purchasing the rifles that the shooters used again hours later in a gunbattle with police.
The defendant apparently backed out of the terrorist plots after the arrests in 2012 of four men who were gearing up to join the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Law enforcement authorities searched Marquez’s home three days after the shooting.
Marquez went so far as to draw a map for investigators, showing just how they planned to commit the attack, they said.
Investigators think that the Inland Regional Center, where Farook and Malik attacked Farook’s co-workers at a holiday gathering, was not their main target.
Marquez’s friends were shocked to learn he was linked to the attack and described him as a friendly, easygoing guy who was not religious and rarely discussed his family or marriage.
“To me, he was reliable enough for him for storage, like to store my gun”, Marquez allegedly told the operator.
