Family Of Laquan McDonald Calls For Alvarez’s Ouster, White House Summit On
Chance the Rapper brought some of Chicago’s struggles to the national stage Saturday by mentioning veteran Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke in his “Saturday Night Live” debut.
Protesters held signs demanding the resignation of Emanuel and Cook County State Attorney Anita Alvarez and for an overhaul of Chicago’s police board.
Meanwhile, State Representative LaShawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat, filed a bill on Wednesday in Springfield to allow for the recall of Emanuel.
Although Emanuel apologized publicly for the McDonald shooting, there have been continuous protests since the footage was released, contesting that the police attempted to cover up the incident. Hunter says they will thank the public for demanding justice and change.
They are also expected to call for the resignation of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.
“We see police officers shooting in the back”.
Emanuel spokeswoman Shannon Breymaier was part of an e-mail chain questioning whether the city could release video of the shooting.
Neslund also wondered why Alvarez, who ultimately charged Van Dyke more than a year after McDonald’s death, has been criticized while federal prosecutors have largely avoided reproach.
Emanuel has recently taken steps to reform the police department, including setting up a task force to review police accountability and firing the police superintendent.
The city had refused to release the video to a journalist, saying doing so could affect an ongoing investigation into the shooting.
Joel Weisman and his panel discuss Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s apology in the wake of the Laquan McDonald crisis and other top stories of the week.
“He was a big boy, but he was a teddy bear”, McDonald’s great uncle, the Rev. Marvin Hunter, told supporters gathered for a press conference on Friday, according to Yahoo.
An attorney for McDonald’s family said they, too, did not want the video made public, explaining that they were still grieving.
Chicago officials fought the release of the video, arguing that it could interfere with any resulting court case.
Eight days before McDonald was killed, Officer George Hernandez fatally shot 25-year-old Ronald Johnson III.
Asked what they hoped to achieve with the petition, Grant said, “Change”. Officers who saw Van Dyke shoot McDonald portrayed the teen as menacing, which is not how he appeared on screen. He fired the police chief and named a new head of the independent body that investigates police conduct.
