N.W.A. joins quartet of 1970s hitmakers in rock hall
A movie about the hip hop group growing up in California, titled “Straight Outa Compton”, was released in August and Cube thinks it helped fans understand their beginnings.
In a lot of ways, it was a year for the Hall to make amends for artists they previously overlooked.
This is N.W.A.’s third try to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and this year they were successful. They were preceded by, in order, Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy.
The 2016 inductees for the the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame have been revealed.
Fans could vote online for those that were nominated, but their votes only counted for one percent of the final tally. We got signed as a five-piece band. The rules state your first single must have come out 25 years prior to nomination, which means Deep Purple have been eligible since 1993 and snubbed.
“We can’t thank the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame enough for honoring Cheap Trick”, said Cheap Trick bass guitarist Tom Petersson in a statement. There was never any despairing about it because we were still working and we still are working, whether we’re honored with it or not. Though not a rock act per se, her influence on contemporary music arguably supersedes that of Steve Miller or Deep Purple-and both her brother Michael Jackson and fellow ’80s icon Madonna have been inducted.
Performing from 1986 to 1991, the group was controversial due to their music’s explicit lyrics, which were often thought to be disrespectful of women and vocally oppositional to the police system in the United States (as highlighted in one of the band’s most popular songs, “F-k Tha Police”).
Furthermore, their performance is guaranteed to steal the show during the induction ceremony at Barclays Center in April.
The inducted members of Deep Purple include most of those from its classic period of the late 1960s to mid-1970s: Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale, the New York Times reported.
The classic rockers are now well into their fourth decade of making catchy ballads combined with hard rock – or what frontman Robin Zander describes as “three great guys and four great chords” in an interview with Hits. I don’t need to tell anyone certain key members and former members of this band do not get on. That avoids the problem. But with this set of inductees, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame feels like it’s gone even further into the already heavily anointed music past. Look at some of the non-entities who’ve got in.
He adds, “If they had asked me what do, I think I would have said, ‘Here’s a list of everyone that was ever in my band”.
