‘Force Awakens’ pulls in record $57M on opening night
This would make the film the first movie to cross the $100 million mark in just one day.
The seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise opened officially in 4,134 theaters on Friday.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens took in a record breaking $57 million at the US box office for its preview showings on Thursday night.
The film began its worldwide rollout Wednesday and has grossed $72.7 million overseas so far, bringing its global cumulative box office to $130 million, The Times reported.
That number blasted the record for the biggest pre-opening in box office history held by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which made $43.5 million on its opening night in 2011. That consists of the most noteworthy single day ever in the United Kingdom, where it made an estimated $14.four million. Amy Miles, CEO at Regal Entertainment Group said: “This holiday season we are excited to be a part of the highly anticipated release of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ At Regal, we are passionate about providing exceptional moviegoing experiences including offering a wide variety of showtimes to meet our guests needs”. Hollis has repeatedly reminded that “there are literally millions of tickets available”.
Strong reviews for the film, which is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, have added to the fervor for The Force Awakens. The American Film Institute listed it among its top 10 films of the year.
After fielding questions, Obama concluded the press conference: “OK everybody, I got to get to ‘Star Wars'”.
