Rock and Roll inductees to Hall of Fame
The 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be an nearly all-classic-rock affair, with Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, Chicago and Steve Miller each being voted in. “If we’re doing something and it’s feeling kind of corny, I won’t want to do it. If we can do something cool…I think the audience wants to see something cool”. Though not a rock act per se, her influence on contemporary music arguably supersedes that of Steve Miller or Deep Purple-and both her brother Michael Jackson and fellow ’80s icon Madonna have been inducted. Yes and other prog rock groups like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, and The Moody Blues, have yet to make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, though each of these bands has made lasting contributions to rock music.
N.W.A had been nominated three previous years without winning approval, but the group enjoyed renewed attention in August with the biopic film “Straight Outta Compton”, which opened at the top of the United States box office.
Deep Purple joins two other British groups already in the Hall of Fame – Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath – that together spawned hard rock.
Inductees will be recognized at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony, which is scheduled for April 8 at the Barclays Center in NY. You know how insane Cheap Trick’s fans get. However, fan voting was not enough to sway voters toward the prog-rock band Yes, which was second with 26.1 million votes (16.2 percent), followed by the Cars, who were also shut out despite collecting 26 million votes (16.1 percent).
Cheap Trick, and Steve Miller also made the 2016 list, but Chic – nominated for a record tenth time – missed out on the honour.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame confirmed it’s inductees today.
Cheap Trick moved swiftly to capitalize on the honor, announcing Thursday the band had signed a new deal with Taylor Swift’s label, Big Machine Records.
The guitar riff for Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” remains one of the most recognizable in rock history. “As a kid, I met Les Paul and Charles Mingus and a bunch of people like that, and they were musicians and that’s really what I wanted to be, so that’s where I set my goals”.
