How Much Money Star Wars: The Force Awakens Made On Thursday Night
Japan and Spain will see openings Friday. Variety reports that “The Force Awakens” grossed about 70 times the amount taken in Thursday night by Universal’s release “Sisters”, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
ToySoul 2015 has officially kicked off in Hong Kong, and fan-favorite toy makers Hot Toys are showing off even more Star Wars: The Force Awakens Hot Toys, including Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn, and everyone’s favorite new droid, BB-8!
Other records falling to the hotly anticipated title include all-time Thursday single day B.O., which was previously set at $50 million by Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005); and the December single day record of $37.13 million set by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The movie’s worldwide rollout, which began Wednesday, has brought in a total of $72.7 million.
Rentrak’s survey of moviegoers showed 76% rated “The Force Awakens” at “excellent” along with 19% as “very good”.
The first “Star Wars” movie, written and directed by George Lucas, hit theaters in 1977 and launched a cultural phenomenon that has lasted almost 40 years. That is until the spinoff movies start rolling in and America rediscovers their love for Lobot and Lando in, Star Wars: Among The Clouds.
A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012. Costumed, lightsaber-wielding fans have lined up around blocks, from Jakarta to Paris, to be among the first to see “The Force Awakens” (and hopefully avoid any spoilers from its intensely guarded plot).
The estimated “Force Awakens” gross so far represents more than half the film’s $100 million-plus record in advance domestic ticket sales. The fourth installment in the Alvin series should make $14 million to $16 million from 3,653 locations.
