Obamas to Visit San Bernardino Families
Marquez, according to the complaint, said he was spooked by the arrests of four Southern California men accused of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.
“Mr. Marquez conspired with Mr. Farook to commit vicious attacks, as set forth in today’s charges”, said U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker.
“Terrorist? Are you kidding me?” said Sharon Morgan, whose husband, Jerry, hired Marquez to check IDs at his bar, Morgan’s Tavern. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searched Marquez’s home on December 5, but he was not charged at that time.
Marquez, who appeared in U.S. District Court in neighboring Riverside, is not suspected to be connected to planning that attack.
But according to the affidavit, Marquez told investigators that Farook was exposing him to extremist views and ideas years ago.
The terrorism charge against Marquez carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and the other two charges he faces each a carry a top sentence of 10 years.
The affidavit said Marquez purchased one rifle in November for 2011 for $741.52, including tax, and another in February 2012 for $758.75.
New revelations from officials and public records in recent days have shown a much deeper connection between Farook and Marquez than previously disclosed.
Marquez, who was charged Thursday with supporting terror, agreed to marry Russian native Mariya Chernykh – the sister of Farook’s brother’s wife – so she could become a legal USA resident. That plan involved Farook throwing pipe bombs at cars, with Marquez shooting first responders from a vantage point. A second attack was planned during afternoon rush hour on the eastbound lanes of State Route 91.
Farook planned to toss a pipe bomb to stop traffic, then walk along the freeway firing at motorists, Marquez told investigators. “Marquez stated that he planned to shoot into the stopped vehicles from his position on the hills”.

He was also charged with defrauding immigration officials “by entering into a sham marriage with a member of Farook’s family”. Marquez also purchased smokeless powder for the objective of building bombs, the affidavit said.
