Standing in line in the cold on Tuesday morning, Vanessa Altamirano, a Lubbock mother of three says she is thankful. Hunger relief, veterans’ affairs services, homeless services, disaster relief, and community health programs are just a few of the ways that the Salvation Army helps those in need.
Now volunteers are busy wrapping the toys ready for them to be distributed to families across the town who are struggling to make ends meet.
Each year, more than 25,000 Salvation Army volunteers spread throughout the country from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve to ring bells and solicit spare change and other donations from holiday shoppers.
Over the years, the Salvation Army in Miami-Dade County has been given pricey donations, like emerald and diamond necklaces, donated last December.
The Salvation Army received an anonymous voicemail. The money will be put towards Salvation Army programs.
The toys were donated through the Angel Tree program.
The Mahoning County Salvation Army is helping 2,200 children with Christmas toys and clothes. “So it’s exciting for me to see these parents coming through today and picking gifts for their children and know the reward the children will experience on Christmas Day”, said Tamayo.
“The news is better this week, but overall we are down and we have a long way to go”, Nauta said.
Mining City Christmas takes donations from the community to help needy families get food and gifts for Christmas.
“I just have to say thank you to the community for the way they’ve responded to our need for toys”. “It’s enough to provide a good Christmas dinner for a family”, said Watson, explaining the meals would not exist without funding from the kettles.
