US, Russia bring ambitious Syria peace plan to UN
However, the Russian president noted that he was ready to work with whoever becomes the next U.S. head of state.
Trump told Face the Nation in October that that he’d “get along very well” with Putin, who is often at odds with the Obama administration.
“I will get along, I think, with Putin, and I will get along with others, and we will have a much more stable, stable world”, Trump said in September.
Putin assessed Trump as “the absolute leader in the American presidential race”, suggesting his comments could be an early attempt to curry favor with a man he may have to deal with.
“He’s a brilliant, intelligent person without a doubt”.
“He says he will want to reach another, deeper, level of relations (with Russia)”, Putin said, according to Russia’s TASS.
As for the Putin-Trump parallels, is anyone really surprised that the two would admire each other from afar? Trump said: “He does not like Obama at all. Of course we welcome it”, Putin said. He continued: “If we can’t work with Russian Federation, that’s not a good thing”.
“It’s not our affair to determine his worthiness, that’s a matter for the American voters”, Putin said. “I think President Obama has effectively managed our relationship with Russia in a way that has advanced the interests of the United States, while also standing up for the basic global norms that Russia violated based on their activities along and across the Ukrainian border”, he said, referring to Russia’s support for Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
In another development, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has spoken by telephone on Tuesday with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov where they focused the conflict in Syria. “I would get along with a lot of the world leaders that this country is not getting along with”.
Putin said the Russian military operation in Syria will continue until a political process starts, but it is up to the Syrians to decide when to stop fighting and sit down for talks.
