LA School District to Reopen After Threat Deemed Not “Credible”
Students exit a bus as they arrive at Venice High School in Los Angeles, California.
Still, in closing down the LA schools officials there handed whoever made the threat a victory.
The threat may have been sent through an anonymous proxy, which makes the email look like it’s coming from another location, Downing said. In New York, it was received by a superintendent early Tuesday. “In order for us to be completely comfortable and clear that it’s not credible, we want to know who the person is, what the intent was, who his associates are”.
“It was so outlandish”, he said.
According to New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, that threat came straight from the Showtime series Homeland.
Bratton indicated that the type of threats in the email mirrored some recent episodes of the show.
In New York, officials made a decision to ignore a similar warning, keeping its schools open.
Speaking to reporters in New York, Bratton said there as “been an effort made to pit Chief Beck – a close personal friend and colleague – against me and vice versa”. But the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said Wednesday that number might actually be closer to $50 million, citing two California law penalties: loss of average daily attendance and loss of instructional minutes.
“There certainly is no uniform approach”, he said. Los Angeles police say the 17-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a city…
“In general people just use it for E-mail like you’d use anything else”, he said.
The New York City Police Department School Safety Division is a division of the NYPD that provides security to the city’s schools.
The other email claimed to be from a student of the “New York City School District”.
“The students in LA will be massacred mercilessly and there is nothing you can do to stop it”. The author claimed to have Kalashnikovs, pressure bombs, Glock 18 semiautomatic pistols and hand grenades, said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, who reviewed the email.
Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti said on Tuesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has determined that the threat is not credible.
The school district regularly receives threats, but this one stood out for its scale, schools Superintendent Ramon Cortines said. Authorities called the measure a precaution after receiving an unspecified bomb threat.
They sure are second-guessed for other mistakes – everything from the way officers treat suspects or confront threats of violence against themselves to how officials conduct investigations involving allegations of brutality.
The threat was delivered to a school board member, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The sudden closure disrupted the routines of many Los Angeles families.
“Whether it’s criminal mischief, whether it’s somebody testing vulnerabilities of multiple cities, we still do not know enough to say definitively”, he said.
The closure affected more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools, and almost 650,000 students. “I think it’s been way exaggerated and overplayed”, Garcetti said.
