EPL: Swansea Sacks Manager Garry Monk
Swansea caretaker boss Alan Curtis paid tribute to former manager Garry Monk after his side had a point snatched away from them at Manchester City.
Giggs, who took over as interim boss when Moyes was sacked as United boss in April 2014, has been widely tipped to succeed Van Gaal, but Jenkins wants to sit down for a discussion with the 42-year-old.
Whoever the new man is, Swans fans will be eager to see what they will bring to club, with the supporters knowing that a new manager does not always guarantee success and survival in this very competitive league.
The club chairman Huw Jenkins in a statement said: “The decision has been made very reluctantly and with a heavy heart”.
Last season, they picked up a club record number of Premier League points. Initial reports had suggested that Brendan Rodgers was the favourite to replace the departed Monk with some also claiming that former United manager David Moyes was also in contention.
“We all feel – staff and players – that we have let Garry down and we want to go a small way to rectifying that on Saturday”.
Likely relegation contenders Aston Villa and Sunderland have already fired their managers and Swansea has now followed suit, three weeks before the January transfer window opens.
Monk had only signed a three-year contract in July, after leading Swansea to a club-record eighth-place finish in the Premier League the previous season.
“We’ve been struggling, obviously, but as I was telling the players after the game, that’s the standard we have to set between now and the end of the season”. Clotet is understood to have twice been offered the Brentford manager’s job in recent weeks but opted to stay with Swansea.
“His commitment has been unquestionable, and his contribution to perhaps the most successful period in the history of our football club will never be forgotten”.
He would present a major coup for Swansea, but convincing him to leave United after so many years will be a real challenge.
