‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ likely to break box office records
Star Wars The Force Awakens is finally out, but did Kylo Ren make it out alive?
The Force Awakens is the seventh movie in the Star Wars franchise and the first in a new trilogy of space adventures, set around 30 years after the events of The Return Of The Jedi.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will clearly surpass the biggest December opening of all time (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey holds the domestic record with $84.6 million).
The most anticipated film in the galaxy opened globally Thursday, setting global and pre-sale box-office records and delighting moviegoers who’ve had opening-night tickets in hand for months.
But movie studio Walt Disney Co said millions of tickets are still available this weekend as theatres add capacity to meet demand.
Interest extended to worldwide markets, where the film brought in $72.7 million in 44 countries. Total US presales are estimated at more than $100 million, while figures from the UK’s opening day are yet to be posted.
The Sun reports that the Chancellor and Culture Minister Ed Vaizey were praised for handing over a series of tax breaks that led to a lot of the film being shot in Britain.
Strong reviews plus a decades-long affection for the “Star Wars” franchise are driving interest, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at box office tracking firm Rentrak. Michael Danke of Los Angeles, who said his friend waited in line for 52 hours for their tickets, was disappointed.
Fans of “Star Wars” finally get the moment they have all been waiting for on Thursday night when the latest installment of the sci-fi-classic hits theaters. We don’t actually see Kylo or Hux escape before the base is destroyed – it’s merely implied that they get away.
“I tried to keep my expectations kind of low and not blow them out of proportion”, Nagler said.
I watched Ghostbusters and the giant marshmallow man gave me nightmares.
