‘Trumbo’ and ‘House of Cards’ top nominees for the SAG Awards 2016
Helen Mirren as Hedda Hopper and Bryan Cranston as Dalton Trumbo, in Jay Roach’s “Trumbo”. The film earned three nominations – Best Cast, Lead Actor for Bryan Cranston and Supporting Actress for Helen Mirren.
“Beasts of No Nation” star Idris Elba was also nominated for best supporting actor, as well as for his role in TV’s “Luther“.
“Trumbo” led in numbers, and “Spotlight” held the spotlight, but some surprising picks – including “Straight Outta Compton“, Sarah Silverman and 9-year-old Jacob Tremblay – earned some limelight when the nominations for the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Wednesday morning.
Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton – both of whom have Oscar campaigns for a Supporting Actor nom for “Spotlight” – were snubbed in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category.
Eddie Redmayne’s hopes of winning a best actor Oscar two years in a row received a boost today when he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Two stunt ensemble categories were also announced: The field for TV comedy or drama includes The Blacklist, Game of Thrones, Marvel’s Daredevil, The Walking Dead and Homeland, and among the competitors for the movie honor are Furious 7, Mad Max: Fury Road, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Jurassic World and Everest.
If there’s a saving grace for the SAG awards, it’s television, the categories for which have made nods to Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis. A nomination for the movie’s sprawling name-brand ensemble, including Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor, had been seen as a given, and Damon was expected to land a lead actor nod as well.
Hollywood awards season continues on Thursday (midnight Friday AEDT) with the Golden Globes nomination ceremony.
Spring Valley-born actress Julianne Margulies, who stars in “The Good Wife“, is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. Alec Baldwin will probably be winning SAG Awards for 30 Rock long after the zombie apocalypse eliminates NBC as we know it. So Wednesday’s nominations were heavy on typical SAG strangeness.
The male actors in a comedy series who will compete for an Actor are Ty Burrell (“Modern Family“), Louis C.K. (“Louie“), William H. Macy (“Shameless“), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang”) and Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent“). Michael Shannon was nominated for “99 Homes” alongside Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies“.
When it comes to the vibrant possibilities of “peak TV”, the Screen Actors Guild has some catching up to do.
Last year “Birdman”, about a faded Hollywood actor trying to make a comeback, won for best cast.
Also boosted with an ensemble nod was the musical drama “Straight Outta Compton“, considered another Oscar long shot.
