Daniel Holtzclaw Learns Of His Possible 263-Year-Sentence On His Birthday

29-year old Daniel Holtzclaw was charged with 36 counts of rape, sexual battery, and other charges.

The sentences recommended by the jury along with each guilty verdict add up to more than 260 years, NBC affiliate KFOR reported. While Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater wanted a jury of a “good cross-section of our community”, defense attorneys sent home every potential black juror.

Other victims had also said during testimonies that they did not think reporting the matter to police was going to help. She didn’t report the crime because she didn’t think anyone would believe her. “I feel like all police will work together and I was scared”.

Formal sentencing was set for January 21.

We attempted to speak with Holtzclaw’s defense attorney Scott Adams, but he did not provide a comment. S.H., 23, said she was high on PCP and having an even stronger reaction after some had spilled on her skin. He also focused on how numerous women had arrest records or histories of drug abuse but ultimately, the jury did not believe the account.

But others, including one of the victims’ mothers, said they were waiting for the formal sentencing before deciding whether justice had been done.

Activists and analysts accused mainstream media outlets of failing to cover the case because the women weren’t “perfect” victims. She testified Holtzclaw groped her several times, exposed himself, and forced her into oral sex, telling her to remain still so that her heart monitor would not go off.

Prosecutors said in their closing arguments that numerous accusers have had troubled lives but that the law protects them as much as anyone else.

The 57-year-old grandmother, identified in court documents only by those initials, said she was driving home from a dominoes game with friends when Holtzclaw pulled her over and told her to pull up her shirt and pull down her trousers, according to The Associated Press.

Holtzclaw lowered his head and visibly trembled as the judge read the rest of the 36 verdicts. He first asked her if she had been drinking, then ordered her out of the auto and into the back seat of his police vehicle.

Last month, the Associated Press reported that almost 1,000 police officers across the country lost their badges during a six year period for rape, sexual assault, sodomy, sex crimes and sexual misconduct.

Holtzclaw was convicted Thursday night of preying on the teenager and other women he met while working his beat in a minority, low-income neighborhood.

The mother says she believes the type of police crime brought to light by the Holtzclaw case “isn’t just a problem in Oklahoma, it’s a problem for the nation”. Holtzclaw drove her to her family’s home and walked her to the porch, where he told her he had to search her. She said he grabbed her breasts, then pulled down her pink shorts and raped her. “When you’re in the county [jail], you can’t get your hair done or do any prepping for court”.

The jury’s verdict is seen as a victory in the fights against police brutality, systemic racism and sexism.

On Wednesday morning, eight men and four women filed into an Oklahoma courtroom and began their third day of deliberations. “To the African-American community, I’ll say this, I appreciate you trusting us and standing down and making sure nothing foolish happened during the investigation of this case and during the trying of this case”.
